WHAT is the "1967 40th Anniversary World Championship"?
1967 40th Anniversary World Championship - is a virtual Formula 1 Championship using the
'Grand Prix Legends' racing simulator to celebrate the classic 1967 F1 season which was perhaps the most exciting time in the sport's history when cars ran without wings for the last time and therefore the power to grip ratio was at its most challenging with around 400 horsepower on hard tyres. 1967 was the year when the legendary Lotus 49 car was introduced and masters like Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill and John Surtees to mention some were battling it out on notorious circuits like Nurburgring and Spa only to be beaten by New Zealander Denny Hulme 'The Bear' in a Brabham machine. Jackie Stewart had yet to start his campaign for seat belts and general safety so this was when Formula 1 was at its most dangerous with almost half the field not to survive the sport in the end.
This Championship is to experience the F1 season of 1967 by doing full length online Grand Prix races with a simulator built specifically around that year in history and which some say is the best of all. To be as true to the season as possible the races will be run following the original calendar to the nearest Sunday and use the same points system and rules as was in 1967, counting only 11 of the 17 races and scratching the 2 worst results from the point events. This will be reflected by using realistic damage model with no resets possible for the 11 races to count in the championship and a moderate setting allowing resets for the remaining 6 non-point races.
Any driver is free to choose which car to race in the championship, but can not change during the season. For every event, 2 separate races will be held to accommodate a world wide field and different time zones. Each of the 2 races will have points awarded (if points event) and drivers free to choose which to enter. As the simulator limits the number of drivers to maximum 19 per race server and there might be more entries than places available on only one for each race, the field will be split evenly on multiple servers with best lap times from prequalifying used to determine who gets a place on the primary and subsequent servers.
Anyone is free to join the championship at any time, all that's required is to have an account with GPLRank and sign up via a message at GPLRank or for the races in a designated forum thread on RaceSimCentral with your GPLRank name, car preference and helmet color. Bandwidth Patch must also be installed as the servers require this.
