The nr 9 Vitaphone Maserati set the best time in the first free practice session, with a lap of 2:18.012 around the 6.946 km circuit. The car, driven by Michael Bartels, Timo Scheider and Eric van de Poele, was three tenths of a second ahead of the nr 11 Larbre Competition Ferrari 550, with the nr 6 GLPK Corvette third - three different manufacturers in the top three, within one second of each other - promising well for the race ! The nr 88 GruppeM car led the GT2 class, ahead of the team's second car, the nr 66. The leading G2 car was the Force One Chrysler Viper, with Mulhner Motorsport's Porsche leading G3.
